What's Happening?
A study led by USC researchers has demonstrated the effectiveness of blood tests in detecting Alzheimer’s disease in individuals with Down syndrome. The study evaluated two blood-based biomarkers, Lumipulse G p-tau217/β-Amyloid 1-42 and PrecivityAD2,
in 39 participants with Down syndrome. These tests successfully identified abnormal amyloid burden in the brain, offering a less invasive and scalable alternative to traditional methods like brain imaging. This advancement is crucial as people with Down syndrome have a higher incidence of Alzheimer’s, yet are often overlooked in diagnostic advancements.

The ability to detect Alzheimer’s in individuals with Down syndrome through blood tests could significantly improve early intervention strategies. The research team plans to validate these findings in a larger cohort of individuals with Down syndrome. Additionally, the results are set to accelerate research, including a clinical trial of donanemab, using blood-measured amyloid levels for participant selection. This could lead to more tailored and effective treatment options for this high-risk population.
