What's Happening?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of nearly 200,000 travel steamers due to a significant burn hazard. The recall affects approximately 119,000 PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamers and 75,400 PurSteam Elite Travel Steamers.
These products, sold on platforms like Amazon and Walmart, have been reported to expel hot water from the steam nozzle during use, posing a serious risk of burns to consumers. Since December 2020, there have been 80 reports of hot water expulsion from the PurSteam Elite Travel Steamer model PS-510, resulting in 14 burn injuries. Similarly, the PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamer model PS-550 has had 392 reports of hot water expulsion, with 40 resulting in burn injuries. Consumers are advised to stop using the steamers immediately and visit recall.pursteam.com to submit a recall request.
Why It's Important?
This recall is significant as it highlights ongoing safety concerns with consumer products, particularly those sold online. The potential for serious burn injuries underscores the importance of stringent safety standards and effective regulatory oversight. For consumers, this recall serves as a reminder to stay informed about product safety notices and to take immediate action when recalls are announced. For manufacturers and retailers, it emphasizes the need for rigorous quality control and the potential reputational and financial impacts of product recalls. The recall also reflects the broader challenges in ensuring product safety in a global supply chain, as these steamers were manufactured in China and imported by Aterian, Inc.
What's Next?
Consumers affected by the recall are instructed to stop using the steamers and follow the recall process to receive a refund. This involves providing contact information, cutting the steamer's cord, and uploading a photo of the device and severed wire. Some consumers may be required to return the item to its importer with a prepaid shipping mailer. The CPSC will likely continue to monitor the situation and may issue further guidance or updates as necessary. Retailers and manufacturers may also review their safety protocols to prevent similar issues in the future.
