A recent study led by Youngho Kim and Dojin An at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Korea, indicates that engaging with sports content on YouTube does not necessarily translate into increased physical activity among college students.
The research, published in Performance Enhancement & Health, surveyed university students in their 20s who consume sports content on the platform. While motivations to use YouTube sports content and technology acceptance were found to increase users' intention to engage with the content, these factors did not significantly correlate with actual sports participation. The study examined how students' motivation and their perception of YouTube's usefulness and ease of use (Technology Acceptance Model - TAM) influenced their viewing habits and real-world sports involvement. The findings suggest a disconnect between online engagement with sports and offline physical activity, highlighting that passive consumption of sports-related videos, including highlights, commentary, training tips, and nutrition advice, does not inherently encourage viewers to become more physically active.
