The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has completed an Emergency Preparedness Review in Finland, identifying both strengths and areas for improvement in the country's readiness for nuclear and radiological emergencies. The 10-day review, which
concluded on Wednesday, highlighted Finland's existing national mechanism that brings together public authorities, industry, and non-governmental organizations to ensure the continuity of critical societal functions during an emergency. The Satasairaala hospital's training plan for managing individuals affected by radioactive contamination was also noted as a strength. However, the IAEA team recommended strengthening national coordination at the preparedness stage by establishing a National Coordinating Mechanism and developing a National Radiation Emergency Plan in accordance with IAEA Safety Standards. Further recommendations include establishing legislation for managing radioactive waste from decontamination activities, improving arrangements for public and emergency worker protection, enhancing public communication, integrating international assistance, and boosting laboratory capacity for environmental, food, and water sample analysis.
