What's Happening?
The Global Resources Innovation Expo (GRX26), set to take place in Perth, Western Australia, from May 5-7, 2026, will host a Global Open Innovation Colab challenge titled 'Critical Disruptors: From Discovery to Recovery'. This initiative is organized
by Austmine and AusIMM in collaboration with global mining innovation hubs such as Expande (Chile), the Peru Mining Innovation Hub, and the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI, Canada), along with Colab Partner Baker Hughes. The challenge aims to address the urgent need to increase the supply of critical minerals while reducing the cost, time, and environmental impact of developing new deposits. Innovators, researchers, and technology developers are invited to propose breakthrough solutions that can accelerate sustainable critical minerals development, supporting the global transition to clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure. The event will feature live pitches, with delegates voting for the best solution. The winner will receive a prize of A$10,000, promotional benefits, and international business development opportunities in Latin America.
Why It's Important?
This challenge is significant as it addresses one of the mining sector's most pressing issues: the need for sustainable and efficient methods to explore and extract critical minerals. These minerals are essential for the development of clean energy technologies, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure, which are crucial for the global transition to a more sustainable economy. By fostering innovation and collaboration among global experts, the challenge aims to uncover technologies that can overcome challenges such as declining ore grades and refining capacity constraints. The initiative not only promotes technological advancement but also encourages commercial readiness and practical implementation, ensuring that solutions are aligned with market demands and operational realities. This could lead to significant advancements in the mining industry, potentially reducing environmental impacts and improving economic outcomes.
What's Next?
Following the live pitches at GRX26, a global panel of experts will assess the submissions based on technical performance, scalability, commercial readiness, and implementation potential. Six finalists will be selected and supported through mentoring and pitch development. These finalists will present their solutions during the Innovation Accelerator Live Pitch Session, engaging directly with mining executives, investors, innovation leaders, and international media. The event aims to create a direct pathway between global innovators and industry leaders, accelerating the commercialization and real-world deployment of innovative solutions. Additionally, finalists will participate in an exclusive Colab Connect Workshop and receive international promotion across partner networks, further enhancing their opportunities for collaboration and business development.
