What's Happening?
Indonesia has launched a new satellite, Lampung-1, built and launched by a Chinese company, STAR.VISION Aerospace, in collaboration with a Chinese university and the Lampung provincial government. The satellite, named after a province on Sumatra island,
is intended to monitor farms, coasts, and land, providing detailed images to assess crop health, water quality, and estimate harvest yields. It also features an onboard computer for immediate data analysis. While local leaders initially stated its primary use would be for agriculture, with future applications in fishing, coastal monitoring, and disaster warnings, questions have arisen regarding data control and potential broader surveillance capabilities. The project is a local-to-local deal between Lampung and China's Shandong province, rather than a national agreement between Beijing and Jakarta, which allowed for faster implementation.
