What's Happening?
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $7.5 million to the University of Southern California (USC) to investigate the connection between 'forever chemicals,' also known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), and the development of liver
and endometrial cancers. This funding supports two research projects that aim to understand the biological mechanisms through which environmental exposures to PFAS contribute to cancer. PFAS are widely used in various everyday products, including nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and food packaging. Due to their slow breakdown, these chemicals accumulate in the environment and human body, with nearly all U.S. residents having detectable levels in their blood and approximately half of the country's public drinking water supplies containing them. While growing evidence links PFAS exposure to health issues like kidney disease and liver damage, the specific biological pathways leading to cancer are not yet fully understood.
