What's Happening?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a salmonella outbreak affecting at least 34 individuals across 13 states, linked to contact with backyard poultry. The outbreak, which occurred between February 26 and March 31, has resulted
in 13 hospitalizations. Notably, over 40% of those affected are children under the age of five. The CDC has identified that some of the salmonella strains involved are resistant to common antibiotics, posing a significant health risk. Backyard poultry, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, are known carriers of salmonella, which can lead to severe illness if transmitted to humans. The CDC has been investigating similar outbreaks in recent years, including a significant one in 2025 that affected over 500 people across 48 states.
Why It's Important?
This outbreak highlights the ongoing public health challenge posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The resistance of some salmonella strains to multiple antibiotics complicates treatment options and increases the risk of severe illness or death. The situation underscores the importance of responsible antibiotic use in agriculture and the need for stringent biosecurity measures in backyard poultry farming. The outbreak also raises concerns about the safety of backyard poultry practices, especially for vulnerable populations such as young children. Public health officials emphasize the importance of hygiene practices, such as handwashing after handling poultry, to prevent the spread of infection.
What's Next?
Health officials are continuing to investigate the sources of the infected poultry, which were obtained from various agricultural retail stores. The CDC is likely to issue further guidance on safe handling practices for backyard poultry to prevent future outbreaks. There may also be increased scrutiny on the sale and distribution of backyard poultry to ensure they are free from harmful pathogens. Public health campaigns may be intensified to educate poultry owners on the risks and preventive measures associated with backyard poultry farming.
