What's Happening?
The United States Space Command (SPACECOM) has conducted a bilateral space domain awareness operation with France, as announced by SPACECOM Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting. This operation, part of the Multinational
Force Operation Olympic Defender (MNF-OOD), demonstrates the commitment of both nations to responsible and dynamic space operations. The operation follows a similar joint mission with the United Kingdom and is part of a broader effort to integrate space capabilities among allied nations. MNF-OOD, initially formed under U.S. Strategic Command in 2013, expanded into a multinational partnership in 2020, including countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, with Germany and France joining in 2024, and New Zealand in 2025. The operation aims to enhance space domain awareness, establish a combined operational framework, and synchronize communication between partner nations.
Why It's Important?
This joint operation underscores the growing importance of international collaboration in space defense, particularly as space becomes an increasingly contested domain. By integrating space capabilities and sharing data, the U.S. and its allies aim to deter adversaries and protect their space interests. The operation highlights the strategic significance of space in national security and the need for resilience against threats such as satellite targeting and cyber attacks. The collaboration also reflects a shift towards a more integrated approach to space warfare, which is crucial for maintaining technological and strategic advantages in the face of evolving global threats.
What's Next?
SPACECOM plans to continue strengthening the Multinational Force Operation Olympic Defender, transforming it into an integrated operational team. The coming year is expected to be pivotal, with a focus on operationalizing a team approach to space warfare. This includes further integration of space capabilities among allies and enhancing the resilience of space operations. The ongoing collaboration may lead to more joint operations and initiatives aimed at bolstering collective defense capabilities in space.
