Next Step of West Michigan, a subsidiary of Mel Trotter Ministries, is enhancing its workforce development initiatives by launching a new carpentry training pathway and building Grand Rapids' first tiny home community. Founded in 2008, the organization
focuses on providing job training and placement in wood manufacturing, construction, and city services for individuals facing barriers such as homelessness, recidivism, and addiction. The program integrates technical training with essential life skills and spiritual development, recognized by the Wood Industry Association with the 2025 Wooden Globe Award for Educator of the Year. The high school program, launched in 2022, aligns with national industry standards, offering students credentials recognized by employers.
