After his military service, he attended the Barnes School of Commerce in Denver, where he met his wife, Mary Lou Friehauf. The couple celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2026. Petersen was a prominent figure in his community, contributing to local civic life and maintaining strong family ties. He is survived by his wife, three children, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
