What's Happening?
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Uzbekistan have signed a new framework agreement aimed at bolstering rural resilience and strengthening the country's agri-food sector. The agreement,
covering 2026-2030, focuses on improving territorial development strategies, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable management of natural resources. It aligns with the United Nations' priorities and the global Sustainable Development Goals. The framework was signed by FAO Deputy Director-General Viorel Gutu and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Agriculture Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is crucial for Uzbekistan, where agriculture is a key economic pillar, accounting for about 19% of GDP. The sector faces challenges such as limited resource access, climate change, and environmental degradation. The framework aims to address these issues by enhancing resilience, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and improving food security. It also seeks to create inclusive economic opportunities, particularly for women and youth in rural areas, thereby contributing to poverty reduction and economic development.
What's Next?
The implementation of the framework will involve various projects aimed at improving agricultural practices and resource management. FAO will continue to support Uzbekistan through initiatives like school feeding programs and biodiversity conservation. The success of these efforts will depend on effective collaboration between FAO, the Uzbek government, and local communities. Monitoring and evaluation will be essential to ensure that the goals of the framework are met and that it contributes to the sustainable development of Uzbekistan's rural regions.
