What's Happening?
The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba) is set to double its collection size following the acquisition of over 1,000 new works from the Daros Latinamerica Collection in Zurich. This acquisition, announced by Malba's founder Eduardo F.
Costantini, includes 1,233 works by 117 artists, significantly enhancing the museum's holdings in contemporary Latin American art. The expansion is part of a broader initiative to mark Malba's 25th anniversary, with plans to expand the museum's physical space to accommodate the new collection. The Daros collection is noted for its strength in post-1950 contemporary art, featuring works by artists such as Doris Salcedo, Ana Mendieta, and Julio Le Parc.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant as it underscores the growing global interest and market competitiveness in Latin American art. By doubling its collection, Malba not only enhances its cultural offerings but also positions itself as a leading institution for Latin American art. This move could attract more visitors and scholars, boosting cultural tourism and academic interest in the region. Additionally, the acquisition reflects a broader trend of increasing recognition and valuation of Latin American artists in the global art market, which could lead to further investments and exhibitions worldwide.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, Malba plans to initiate a major expansion project to accommodate the new works. Construction is expected to begin next fall, with new exhibition spaces being built underneath Plaza Perú, adjacent to the museum. This expansion will allow Malba to host more temporary exhibitions and provide a permanent home for the newly acquired pieces. The museum's enhanced collection and expanded facilities are likely to increase its prominence on the international art scene, potentially leading to more collaborations and exhibitions with other global institutions.
