What's Happening?
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a grant exceeding $420,000 to the Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). This funding will establish a new research program named Simulation
and Technology for Resilient Outcomes in Natural Hazards Engineering and Graduate-Readiness (STRONG-R). The program aims to provide research experiences for undergraduates (REUs) by sending 27 students, across three cohorts, to natural hazards research facilities at the University of Washington, Cal Berkeley, and UT Austin. This initiative builds upon Klesse College's decade-long involvement with the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI), a nationwide network dedicated to simulating and mitigating the effects of natural disasters. The program seeks to engage students from various disciplines, including civil engineering, computer science, data analytics, social sciences, public policy, geology, and materials science, to develop expertise in designing more resilient infrastructure.

This NSF grant is crucial for addressing the escalating costs and impacts of natural disasters in the U.S. Federal data indicates that the five-year average cost of weather and climate disasters to the United States surpassed $100 billion as of 2023, covering only property damage. The broader societal costs, including impacts on well-being, access to essential services like water, electricity, transportation, and healthcare, can be significantly higher. By investing in undergraduate research and training, the STRONG-R program aims to cultivate a new generation of engineers and scientists equipped to design and implement disaster-resilient solutions. What's Next?
The STRONG-R program will commence with its first cohort of students, who will begin their research experiences at various natural hazards facilities. The co-principal investigators, JoAnn Browning and Karina Vielma, along with research education specialist Robin Nelson, will oversee the program's implementation and student development. The long-term goal is to encourage these students to pursue careers in natural hazards engineering and science, ultimately contributing to the development of more robust infrastructure across the U.S. The success of this program could also serve as a model for future initiatives aimed at strengthening the nation's resilience against increasingly frequent and severe natural disasters.
