What's Happening?
NPR is commemorating the 10th anniversary of the death of its award-winning photojournalist David Gilkey, who was killed in Afghanistan alongside NPR interpreter Zaihullah Tamanna. Gilkey was on assignment
as an embedded journalist with the Afghan National Army when their convoy was ambushed in Helmand province. This tragic event marked the only instance of NPR staff being killed in the line of duty. NPR's veteran Pentagon reporter, Tom Bowman, joined host Anthony Brooks on 'Here & Now' to remember Gilkey's contributions and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Why It's Important?
The remembrance of David Gilkey underscores the risks faced by journalists covering conflict zones. His death highlights the dangers of war reporting and the critical role journalists play in bringing stories from conflict areas to the public. Gilkey's work exemplified the courage and dedication required to report from dangerous environments, and his legacy continues to inspire journalists worldwide. This commemoration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by journalists in pursuit of truth and the importance of supporting press freedom and safety.
