The California Energy Commission (CEC) has unanimously approved new rules that will establish the nation's first-ever efficiency standards for replacement tires. These regulations aim to ensure that replacement tires sold
in California are, on average, as energy-efficient as the original equipment tires that come with new vehicles. The rules will be implemented in two phases: the first phase begins in 2029, setting a maximum rolling resistance level of 9.1 newtons per kilonewton (N/kN), and the second, stricter phase starts in 2033, lowering the standard to 7.2 N/kN. The CEC developed these standards after testing 537 types of tires. Additionally, the new rules will introduce a 'leaf' rating system to help consumers identify more efficient tires. While the CEC claims these regulations will save Californians money on fuel and reduce carbon emissions, tire manufacturers like Goodyear have expressed concerns that the rules will increase costs for consumers and eliminate a significant portion (estimated 70% by 2033) of currently available tires.
