Paleontologists have uncovered the first known trackway made by an adult Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) in the badlands of southwestern North Dakota. The discovery, made by a team from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Liverpool John Moores University,
consists of four connected, large, three-toed footprints. These tracks date back approximately 66.5 million years ago, placing them near the very end of the Cretaceous Period, shortly before the asteroid impact that led to the extinction of dinosaurs. The trackway measures about 23 feet long, with individual toes around 3.3 feet long. The spacing between the prints suggests the T. rex had a stride of about 13 feet and was likely walking at a speed of 3.5 to 4.5 mph. This finding provides a rare glimpse into the behavior of an adult T. rex as it moved across the ancient landscape, offering insights beyond what skeletal remains alone can provide. The site was scanned using 3D technology to support the hypothesis, and T. rex skeletal elements found nearby further strengthen the identification.
