What's Happening?
Circle Brook Farm on Staten Island is offering community-supported agriculture (CSA) memberships at half price for the final 12 weeks of the harvest season, starting September 4. The CSA provides three membership tiers, allowing members to receive fresh, locally grown produce. Despite recent dry conditions, the farm has maintained healthy crops through irrigation. Current shares include a variety of vegetables and fruits, with premium members receiving additional items. Weekly pickups are scheduled at Christ Church's parking lot, with unclaimed shares donated to the church. Members are required to contribute volunteer hours, assisting with distribution and other activities.
Why It's Important?
The discounted CSA membership offers an opportunity for Staten Island residents to access fresh, locally sourced produce at reduced costs, promoting healthier eating habits and supporting local agriculture. This initiative reflects the growing trend of community-supported agriculture, which fosters direct connections between consumers and farmers. By participating in the CSA, members contribute to sustainable farming practices and community engagement, enhancing local food security and reducing reliance on mass-produced goods.
What's Next?
As the harvest season progresses, CSA members can expect a variety of produce, including sweet corn strategically planted to avoid wildlife interference. The farm will continue to manage crop health through irrigation and strategic planting. Members will engage in volunteer activities, supporting distribution and community events. The CSA's success may encourage similar programs in other regions, promoting local agriculture and community involvement.
