Next Step of West Michigan, a subsidiary of Mel Trotter Ministries, is enhancing its workforce development programs by integrating industry-standard technical training with essential life-skill development. Operating from a former Kindel Furniture factory
in Grand Rapids, the organization focuses on training adults and students in woodworking, construction, and city services. The program is particularly aimed at individuals facing barriers such as homelessness, recidivism, and addiction. Recognized by the Wood Industry Association with the 2025 Wooden Globe Award for Educator of the Year, Next Step's curriculum aligns with national industry organizations like the Woodwork Career Alliance of North America and the National Woods Board. This alignment ensures that graduates receive credentials that are immediately recognized and valued by employers. The organization has also launched a High School Wood Tech Training Program, allowing students to earn industry-recognized certifications.
