What's Happening?
Gunnar Sigge, PhD, an associate professor and head of the Department of Food Science at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, has been named the new president of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). He succeeds Peggy Poole, PhD, who has completed
her one-year term. Concurrently, Jeffrey Varcoe, PhD, Senior Vice President, Science and Technical Excellence at The J.M. Smucker Co., has been appointed president-elect. Varcoe is slated to begin his term as IFT president on September 1, 2027. Sigge has a long history of active involvement with IFT, including serving on its board of directors from 2021-2024, and has been a leader in the South African Association for Food Science and Technology since 1997. His research interests include food processing, sustainable water use in the food industry, and food safety.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Gunnar Sigge as president and Jeffrey Varcoe as president-elect of the Institute of Food Technologists is significant for the U.S. food science community and global food system. Sigge's international background and expertise in addressing complex food system challenges, such as food processing and sustainable water use, will bring a global perspective to IFT's leadership. This is crucial as the U.S. food industry grapples with interconnected global issues like supply chain resilience and food security. Varcoe's extensive experience in food manufacturing, particularly his roles at The J.M. Smucker Co. and Schwan's Co., will provide a strong industry voice, ensuring that IFT's initiatives are relevant and practical for food science professionals in the U.S. His leadership will help bridge academic research with industrial application, fostering innovation and addressing critical needs within the U.S. food sector.
What's Next?
As Gunnar Sigge assumes the presidency, IFT is expected to focus on strengthening global connections within the food science community and equipping professionals with necessary knowledge and resources. His emphasis on bringing credible science to discussions shaping the future of food suggests a push for evidence-based solutions to industry challenges. Jeffrey Varcoe, as president-elect, will spend the coming year preparing to take the helm, likely engaging with various IFT committees and stakeholders to understand key priorities. His transition to president in September 2027 will bring a continued focus on integrating industry perspectives into IFT's strategic direction. Both leaders will be instrumental in guiding IFT's efforts to address evolving food safety standards, sustainability practices, and technological advancements relevant to the U.S. food and beverage industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The leadership transition at IFT highlights the increasing interconnectedness of global food systems and the need for diverse expertise to address complex challenges. Sigge's appointment, coming from an international academic background, underscores a recognition that solutions to food security and sustainability require a worldwide collaborative approach, moving beyond national silos. Varcoe's industry experience, particularly in food safety and technical leadership, reflects the critical role of corporate expertise in shaping scientific and regulatory standards. This blend of academic and industrial leadership could foster a more holistic approach to food science, influencing policy-making, research funding, and educational programs in the U.S. The emphasis on 'credible science' also suggests a commitment to combating misinformation and promoting public trust in food technologies and practices.
