What's Happening?
Joey Birrittier has joined Edwardsville High School as the new agriculture teacher, marking his first year in the profession. Originally from Waterloo, Birrittier graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in agriculture education and previously worked as a sales representative manager for Frito Lay. His transition to teaching is driven by a passion to introduce agriculture to suburban students who may not have direct exposure to the field. Birrittier aims to broaden students' understanding of agriculture beyond traditional farming, emphasizing its diverse aspects. He teaches various classes, including consumer education, intro to agriculture, horticulture, and work-based learning, focusing on practical knowledge and public speaking skills.
Why It's Important?
Birrittier's role is significant as it addresses the gap in agricultural education for suburban students, who often associate agriculture solely with farming. By expanding their understanding, he prepares them to be informed consumers and responsible adults. His approach includes practical lessons on food origins, business aspects of agriculture, and hands-on experiences like engine mechanics. This education is crucial in a region known for its agricultural production, such as Madison and St. Clair counties, which are recognized for horseradish farming. Birrittier's efforts contribute to a broader appreciation and understanding of agriculture's role in everyday life and the economy.
What's Next?
Birrittier plans to enhance his curriculum with guest speakers, such as a horseradish farmer, and field trips to events like the Farm Progress Show in Decatur. These activities aim to expose students to current and future innovations in agriculture. He also intends to utilize the school's greenhouse for horticulture projects, including growing unique plants like Venus Flytraps. Additionally, Birrittier is preparing to introduce a mechanics class where students will learn to dismantle and reassemble engines, providing them with valuable technical skills.
