The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a draft risk evaluation for 1,2-dichloropropane under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). This chemical, a volatile, colorless liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor, is used in industrial
and commercial applications, including as a laboratory chemical and a reactant. The EPA has recognized 1,2-dichloropropane as likely carcinogenic to humans and has evaluated both cancer and non-cancer health effects in its draft. Although its use in U.S. manufactured cleaning and furnishing care products ceased in 2022, the EPA included these uses in its evaluation due to the potential for imported products to contain the chemical. The draft identifies significant contributions to unreasonable risk for workers and occupational non-users from inhalation and dermal exposure under 11 conditions of use. Additionally, three consumer uses of 1,2-dichloropropane as a cleaner, polish, or wax were preliminarily found to contribute to unreasonable risk through inhalation and dermal exposure. The EPA's draft does not currently identify unreasonable risk to the general population or the environment.
