What's Happening?
California has introduced a new tool called DROP, designed to help residents request the deletion of their personal data from over 500 data broker websites using a single form. Starting August 1, data brokers
will be required to process these requests every 45 days. The initiative, led by CalPrivacy, aims to enhance privacy protection for Californians, with over 300,000 residents already signed up. Tom Kemp, Executive Director of CalPrivacy, emphasized the importance of this tool in empowering individuals to control their personal information and protect their privacy.
Why It's Important?
The launch of DROP is a significant step in the ongoing efforts to safeguard personal privacy in the digital age. As data brokers collect and sell personal information, this tool provides Californians with a means to reclaim control over their data. The initiative reflects growing concerns about data privacy and the need for robust measures to protect individuals from unauthorized data usage. By facilitating the deletion of personal data, DROP empowers residents to mitigate risks associated with data breaches and identity theft, promoting a safer online environment.
