What's Happening?
UNICEF is offering an internship position in Lusaka, Zambia, focused on supporting the Social Policy section, specifically the Public Finance Management team. The intern's primary role will be to assist in the development and population of an internal
online dashboard dedicated to child wellbeing and social sector financing. This involves compiling, cleaning, organizing, and visualizing data from national surveys and budget documents. The goal is to create a user-friendly and updateable dashboard that will be valuable for UNICEF's program planning, advocacy efforts, and engagement with the Zambian government and other partners. The internship aims to address and mitigate the threat of poverty faced by children in Zambia by providing data-driven insights.
Why It's Important?
This internship is crucial for enhancing data-driven decision-making in child welfare and social policy in Zambia. By creating a comprehensive dashboard, UNICEF and its partners will gain better insights into the state of child wellbeing and how public finances are allocated to social sectors. This transparency and accessibility of data can significantly improve the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing child poverty and addressing the multiple causative factors. It allows for more targeted program planning, stronger advocacy for child rights, and more informed engagement with government bodies to influence policy and resource allocation. Ultimately, this initiative contributes to the realization of every child's right to protection and development in Zambia.
What's Next?
The intern will be responsible for the initial development and population of the dashboard. Following this, the dashboard is expected to become an ongoing tool for UNICEF's Social Policy section, regularly updated with new data. The insights derived from the dashboard will inform future program strategies and advocacy campaigns. It will also serve as a resource for engaging with the Zambian government to promote evidence-based policy-making and ensure that public finances are effectively utilized for child-focused initiatives. The success of this project could lead to similar data visualization efforts in other UNICEF country offices, further strengthening global efforts in child protection and development.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of this dashboard signifies a broader trend towards leveraging data analytics and visualization in humanitarian and development work. Beyond simply collecting data, the emphasis is on making it actionable and accessible to a wider audience, including policymakers and program managers. This approach fosters greater accountability and transparency in how resources are used to benefit children. Ethically, it underscores the importance of understanding the specific needs of vulnerable populations through robust data, ensuring that interventions are not only well-intentioned but also evidence-based and impactful. It also highlights the role of technology in bridging information gaps and empowering organizations to make more informed decisions for social good.
