Joliet City Council Member Juan Moreno has urged state and federal officials to replace, rather than merely repair, the city's aging drawbridges. On August 20, Moreno sent a letter to Governor JB Pritzker and the transportation secretaries for both state and federal governments,
advocating for a new approach to the city's nearly century-old bridges. This call for action follows a recent emergency closure of the Ruby Street bridge on August 14, which caused significant traffic disruptions and left people stranded for nearly an hour. Moreno's letter emphasized that Joliet cannot continue to rely on repeated emergency repairs and temporary rehabilitations for bridges that have exceeded their practical service life. Two of the six drawbridges over the Des Plaines River were already closed for maintenance when the Ruby Street bridge experienced its emergency closure.
