The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has successfully managed unprecedented electricity demand as temperatures soared above 100°F. This week, ERCOT recorded a peak demand of 91,308 megawatts (MW), surpassing previous records. Despite the
high demand, ERCOT did not issue any requests for customers to reduce energy use, thanks to its robust mix of batteries, renewables, and gas generation. The grid operator had anticipated a potential demand of over 92 gigawatts (GW) this summer, driven by high temperatures and new loads from data centers. To enhance reliability, ERCOT added approximately 11 GW to the grid earlier this year. The organization has also implemented a new 'Batch Zero' process to streamline large-user connection requests, ensuring that large electricity users like data centers connect in a manner that the grid can support reliably.
