A recent observational study suggests that GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, may lower the risk of fragility fractures in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The study, led by Christopher D. Hamad, MD, at UCLA, found a 21% reduction in fracture risk among
GLP-1 users compared to those using DPP-4 inhibitors. Fragility fractures, often requiring surgery, can lead to significant loss of mobility and independence. While the study indicates a promising association, it does not establish a direct causal relationship between GLP-1 drugs and reduced fracture risk. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms behind this potential benefit.
