In Burke County, North Dakota, a significant paleontological discovery is underway as the North Dakota Geological Survey excavates a rare mammoth skeleton beneath a garage. The excavation, which began in June 2026, is revealing a more complete prehistoric
mammoth than initially anticipated. The discovery dates back to 1988 when the bones were first found during the construction of a garage. The current excavation is led by State Geologist Clint Boyd and involves a team of summer interns and geology students from the University of North Dakota. The team has so far uncovered parts of the skull, lower jaw, and ribs, with hopes of finding the tusks. The project is funded by a $150,000 allocation from state lawmakers, and the excavation is expected to conclude in September 2026, with plans to return in 2027 to explore areas outside the garage.
