What's Happening?
Pakistan's passport has been ranked as one of the weakest globally, securing the 103rd spot in the Henley Passport Index 2025. This marks the fifth consecutive year of Pakistan's low ranking in the index,
which evaluates 199 passports based on visa-free access to 227 destinations. Pakistani passport holders have visa-free access to 31 destinations, sharing the position with Yemen, followed by Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. In contrast, neighboring countries such as China, Iran, and India have better rankings, with China at 64th, Iran at 85th, and India at 98th. The index is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Why It's Important?
The ranking highlights the challenges faced by Pakistani citizens in terms of global mobility and access. A weak passport can limit opportunities for travel, business, and international collaboration, affecting economic and social prospects. The comparison with neighboring countries underscores regional disparities in global access, which can influence diplomatic and economic relations. The ranking also reflects broader issues related to governance and international perception, impacting Pakistan's ability to engage effectively on the global stage.
