U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Steve Kapala, a native of Alpena, Michigan, is part of the dive medical team tasked with welcoming the Artemis II crew back to Earth. The Artemis II mission, which set a record for the farthest distance traveled by
a manned spacecraft, is returning to Earth with a water landing in the Pacific Ocean. The U.S. Navy's dive medical team, stationed on the USS John P. Murtha, will be the first to open the Orion capsule and conduct initial medical assessments on the crew. The team is trained in dive medicine and prepared to handle any medical needs the astronauts may have upon their return.
