What's Happening?
The University of Evansville is enhancing its support for the Latino community through initiatives focused on mental health, education, and culturally competent care. These efforts are part of the ChangeLab program, which was launched in 2020 to address
healthcare and education needs while fostering trust within the community. A recent highlight was a mental health workshop for Latino adolescents and their families, held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Evansville. The workshop, led by Dr. Cindy Crowe and Dr. Jennifer Braun, focused on self-esteem and communication, providing resources in a culturally affirming environment. Additionally, ChangeLab received a $3,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Evansville to fund interpretation services at the clinic, ensuring language is not a barrier to receiving mental health support. The initiative also includes presentations on Latino healthcare and mental health at Deaconess Midtown Hospital.
Why It's Important?
This expansion of outreach efforts by the University of Evansville is significant as it addresses critical gaps in mental health and educational support for the Latino community. By providing culturally competent care and resources, the university is helping to break down barriers that often prevent Latino individuals from accessing necessary services. This initiative not only meets immediate needs but also builds sustainable pathways for empowerment and long-term community development. The grant for interpretation services further ensures that language does not hinder access to mental health care, promoting inclusivity and equity in healthcare access.
