The Gary/Chicago International Airport (GCIA) has received an $8.3 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Airport Improvement Program. This grant completes the total $18.3 million in federal funding required for the construction
of a new air traffic control tower. U.S. Representative Frank J. Mrvan (D-Highland) was instrumental in securing this funding, with GCIA Executive Director Dan Vicari acknowledging his support throughout the grant process. The multi-year funding effort for the new tower began in 2022, and a separate $10 million grant was awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration in May. Construction of the new tower is anticipated to begin soon, following the award of a $16 million construction contract to Larson-Danielson Construction of LaPorte, Indiana, in June. The project is expected to create approximately 120 skilled trade jobs and be completed by late 2027.
