What's Happening?
Costco has issued a recall for over 900,000 bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG due to a risk of the bottles shattering. The recall was initiated by F&F Fine Wines International Inc.,
operating as Ethica Wines, after receiving reports of bottles breaking, which resulted in one laceration injury. The affected bottles were sold in several states including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin between April and August 2025. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has advised consumers to stop using the recalled bottles and dispose of them, with instructions available for obtaining a refund from Costco.
Why It's Important?
The recall highlights potential safety hazards associated with consumer products, emphasizing the importance of product safety standards and monitoring. For Costco, this recall could impact consumer trust and sales, particularly in the affected regions. It also underscores the role of regulatory bodies like the CPSC in ensuring consumer safety. The incident may prompt other retailers and manufacturers to review their product safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences.
What's Next?
Consumers who purchased the affected prosecco are advised to follow the recall instructions and seek refunds. Ethica Wines and Costco may face increased scrutiny and potential legal implications depending on the extent of injuries or damages reported. The recall could lead to further investigations into the manufacturing process of the bottles to prevent future incidents.
