What's Happening?
Finnfund, a Finnish development financier, has made a follow-on investment in Communication & Renewable Energy Infrastructure (CREI) to enhance sustainable telecom energy infrastructure in South Sudan. CREI, which manages telecom tower and renewable power
assets across Africa and Asia, is deploying hybrid energy solutions for mobile network operators. The investment supports the modernization and expansion of solar-hybrid energy systems for MTN South Sudan's 499 telecom sites under a ten-year energy as a service contract. This initiative has already modernized 490 sites, reaching over four million customers and expanding network coverage from 69% to 80% of the population over the past three years. The project has led to a 43% reduction in carbon emissions and a significant decrease in noise and local air pollution, with the renewable energy ratio increasing from 11% to 42%. CREI also invests in community development, including solarized maternity wards, enhancing maternal and neonatal health services.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of solar-hybrid energy systems in South Sudan is crucial for improving digital connectivity and environmental sustainability. By reducing reliance on diesel generators, the project significantly cuts carbon emissions and local pollution, contributing to climate resilience. The increased network coverage facilitates digital inclusion, allowing more people to access mobile and internet services, which are vital for economic development and social connectivity. Additionally, the investment in community infrastructure, such as solarized healthcare facilities, enhances public health outcomes. The initiative also supports gender equality by promoting female representation in technical roles, ensuring equitable access to training and career advancement opportunities.
What's Next?
Further modernization of telecom infrastructure is expected to yield even greater sustainability gains. As the project progresses, it may inspire similar initiatives in other regions, promoting the adoption of renewable energy solutions in telecom sectors across Africa and Asia. The focus on gender equality and community development could set a precedent for future investments, encouraging companies to integrate social responsibility into their business models. Stakeholders, including governments and international organizations, may look to replicate this model to enhance digital connectivity and environmental sustainability in other underserved areas.
