What's Happening?
Türkiye's tourism sector generated $25.75 billion in income during the first half of 2026, according to official data. Despite a 2.7% decline in visitor numbers, the average spending per visitor increased by 2.5% to $1,020. The Turkish Statistical Institute
reported that package-tour spending accounted for 30.2% of total tourism income, followed by food and beverage at 21%. The decline in visitor numbers was offset by higher spending per visitor, maintaining the tourism revenue at sustainable levels. Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek noted that structural improvements have helped contain the negative impacts of geopolitical developments on the tourism sector.
Why It's Important?
The resilience of Türkiye's tourism sector amid declining visitor numbers highlights the effectiveness of strategic measures to enhance visitor spending. The increase in average spending per visitor suggests a shift towards attracting higher-spending tourists, which can help sustain the sector's contribution to the national economy. The tourism industry's ability to maintain revenue levels despite geopolitical challenges underscores its importance as a key economic driver. The sector's performance also reflects the success of Türkiye's efforts to diversify its tourism offerings and improve infrastructure, which can attract a broader range of international visitors.
