What's Happening?
The PEN Presents x SALT initiative is a collaborative grant program aimed at enhancing the global reach of literature through translation. This partnership between English PEN and the South Asian Literature in Translation project (SALT) is currently accepting
submissions until May 31, 2026. The program supports translators worldwide, offering grants to create sample translations of works from South Asian languages that have not been previously translated into English. A shortlist of 24 applicants will receive £500 each to produce 5,000-word samples, with 12 final selections. The initiative seeks to bring underrepresented languages and regions to the forefront of English literature, providing a platform for diverse storytelling and cultural exchange.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the underrepresentation of South Asian languages in English literature, promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity. By funding translations, the program not only supports translators but also enriches the literary landscape with diverse narratives. This can lead to increased visibility for South Asian authors and their works, potentially influencing publishing trends and reader preferences. The program also highlights the importance of translation in bridging cultural gaps and fostering global understanding, which is crucial in today's interconnected world.
What's Next?
Following the submission deadline, an expert panel will review the applications and select the final recipients of the grants. These translations will then be presented to agents and editors, who will have the opportunity to bring these works to full publication. The success of this initiative could inspire similar programs in other regions, further diversifying the global literary market. Additionally, the outcomes of this program may influence future funding and support for translation projects, encouraging more publishers to invest in diverse literary voices.
