What's Happening?
Indra has upgraded the Meteor missile with an improved datalink to enhance its lethality. The new datalink increases the missile's range, kill envelope, and resistance to countermeasures. The upgrade involves a redesigned datalink between the missile and the launch
platform, responsible for guidance and control. Indra presented the design to the original equipment manufacturer, MBDA, and the Meteor programme's International Joint Project Office, obtaining approval at the preliminary design review stage. The Meteor BVRAAM uses two-way datalinked mid-course guidance before switching to its active radar seeker for the terminal phase.
Why It's Important?
The upgrade to the Meteor missile's datalink is significant for enhancing its operational capabilities and effectiveness in combat scenarios. By increasing the missile's range and resistance to countermeasures, the upgrade ensures greater lethality and reliability. This development is crucial for maintaining strategic advantages in air-to-air combat and addressing evolving threats. The improved datalink enhances the missile's guidance and control, contributing to more precise targeting and successful engagements.
What's Next?
Following the approval of the datalink design, Indra will begin development and integration into the Meteor system. The upgrade is expected to enhance the missile's performance in various operational scenarios, providing greater flexibility and effectiveness. The success of the upgrade could lead to further advancements in missile technology and increased collaboration with international partners.
