What's Happening?
Pakistan has commissioned its first Chinese-built submarine, the Hangor, marking a significant enhancement of its naval capabilities. The submarine, an export variant of China's 039A Yuan-class, was commissioned in a ceremony in Sanya, China, attended
by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and navy chief Naveed Ashraf. The Hangor-class submarine is equipped with advanced sensors, torpedoes, and anti-ship cruise missiles, and features Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, allowing it to remain submerged longer. This development is part of a $5 billion deal for eight submarines, with four being built in China and four in Pakistan.
Why It's Important?
The commissioning of the Hangor submarine represents a deepening of defense ties between Pakistan and China, potentially altering the strategic balance in the Indian Ocean region. This move enhances Pakistan's naval capabilities, allowing it to better protect its maritime interests and deter aggression. For India, Pakistan's main rival, this development may prompt a reassessment of its own naval strategies and capabilities. The U.S. and other regional powers may also need to consider the implications of increased Chinese influence in South Asia's defense landscape.
