A comprehensive scoping review has been conducted to assess the role of doulas in the pregnancy care continuum and their impact on maternal and child health. The review analyzed 115 studies, with a significant
portion from the United States, focusing on diverse populations including Medicaid recipients, Black and Latina women, and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. The studies examined various aspects of doula support, such as its effect on delivery modes, labor induction, pain management, and hospital stays. Findings indicate that doulas generally contribute to positive labor outcomes, including a decrease in cesarean births and an increase in non-instrumental vaginal deliveries. However, some studies reported mixed or negative impacts, particularly concerning cesarean delivery rates.
