A recent study conducted by Matthew Robinson, chair of the emergency medicine department at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, has demonstrated that a modified night-shift schedule can significantly improve the health and well-being of physicians.
Instead of the traditional 10 PM to 6 AM shift, participating emergency medicine physicians worked from 8 PM to 4 AM. This earlier schedule allowed physicians to sleep more during conventional nighttime hours, which helped align their sleep patterns with the body's natural circadian rhythm. The study measured biomarkers associated with inflammation, such as white blood cell count and platelet count, before and after the schedule change. Both markers showed a decrease after physicians adopted the earlier shift, indicating a reduction in inflammation. Participants also used Fitbit devices to track their sleep, reporting more restorative sleep and feeling more refreshed.
