What's Happening?
Pato O'Ward, McLaren's reserve and testing driver, recently participated in Formula 1 practice sessions, driving the car typically handled by Lando Norris. O'Ward, who also competes full-time in the NTT
INDYCAR SERIES for McLaren, faced health issues during the practice, including stomach problems and dehydration, which required medical attention. Despite these challenges, O'Ward reported feeling better afterward. His participation in the practice session is part of F1's requirement for teams to use a junior driver with minimal F1 experience in two practice sessions each season. O'Ward completed 30 laps and finished 13th in the session, primarily using hard tires while his teammate Oscar Piastri used medium tires.
Why It's Important?
O'Ward's involvement in both INDYCAR and Formula 1 highlights the crossover potential between different motorsport disciplines. His ability to adapt to the distinct driving styles required for each type of car demonstrates the versatility and skill of drivers who can compete at high levels across different racing formats. This dual participation also underscores McLaren's strategic use of its drivers to fulfill F1 regulations while maximizing their exposure and experience. The health issues faced by O'Ward during the practice session bring attention to the physical demands and challenges faced by drivers in high-pressure environments.
What's Next?
Following the conclusion of the F1 season in December, O'Ward plans to refocus on his INDYCAR duties, preparing for the 2026 season. Although there were initial plans for an INDYCAR race in Mexico City in 2026, these have been postponed to 2027. O'Ward expressed interest in racing both INDYCAR and F1 in Mexico, indicating his enthusiasm for competing in his home country. His appearances continue to draw significant fan attention, reflecting his growing popularity and the potential for increased engagement in motorsport events in Mexico.
Beyond the Headlines
O'Ward's participation in F1 practice sessions, despite not being a full-time F1 driver, highlights the opportunities for drivers to gain experience and visibility in different racing formats. This approach can enhance their career prospects and broaden their appeal to fans and sponsors. The health challenges faced by O'Ward also emphasize the importance of driver well-being and the need for adequate medical support during high-stress events.
