Congressman Nick Langworthy has presented an America 250 Community Heroes Award to David Smith upon Smith's retirement. Smith is being recognized for his extensive career in education, spanning over 33
years, as well as his seven years of service as Mayor of Gowanda and his involvement with the Gowanda Free Methodist Church. The award is part of a program honoring individuals within the congressional district who demonstrate exceptional service, leadership, and positive community impact. Smith's retirement has prompted numerous accolades from the Gowanda community and beyond, including his upcoming induction into the Gowanda Central School Hall of Fame and his selection as the 2026 Assistant Principal of the Year by the School Administrators' Association of New York State (SAANYS) Region 12 selection committee. State Senator George Borrello also honored Smith with a proclamation from the State of New York, acknowledging his role as a pillar in Gowanda.

Additionally, Smith and his wife, Jill, intend to carry on with their Tangible Kingdom school outreach program, which provides essential support such as school supplies, shoes, clothing, Thanksgiving meals, and Christmas presents to families in need. This program served 78 families last year, and a similar impact is anticipated for the current year. Smith's induction into the Gowanda Central School Hall of Fame is scheduled for Friday, September 18, at Gowanda's Historic Hollywood Theater, where he will be honored alongside Barbara Dempsey.
