What's Happening?
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has been awarded the prestigious Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) designation by the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS),
a part of the National Institutes of Health. This federal award elevates UMMC into an elite category for medical and research education, specifically for its MD-PhD students. The MSTP designation provides critical funding to support student stipends and other needs for physician-scientists in training. UMMC's existing program already offers stipend support and tuition scholarships covering four years of medical school and up to three years of graduate research. The award acknowledges the strength of UMMC's research, educational, and clinical environments, and its capacity to prepare students for careers that integrate medicine with scientific discovery. Dr. Joshua Speed, associate professor and director of UMMC’s MSTP, highlighted that this recognition is the most prestigious for an MD-PhD program by the NIH, affirming the program's health and strengthening its ability to attract top students.
