What's Happening?
The World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) has announced the latest list of Best Tourism Villages for 2025, recognizing 52 communities across various regions for their efforts in promoting tourism as a tool
for rural development. These villages, selected from over 270 applications from 65 UN Tourism Member States, are acknowledged for safeguarding cultural heritage, preserving natural resources, and creating economic opportunities through tourism. The initiative, part of the UN Tourism for Rural Development Programme, aims to accelerate tourism's role in rural development by valuing and safeguarding rural areas along with their associated landscapes, knowledge systems, biological diversity, and cultural heritage. The recognized villages join the Best Tourism Villages Network, which now includes 319 villages globally.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of these villages highlights the potential of tourism to drive economic growth and social inclusion in rural areas. By promoting sustainable tourism practices, these communities can enhance their cultural and natural assets, leading to increased economic opportunities and improved quality of life for residents. The initiative supports the idea that tourism can be a powerful tool for shared prosperity and territorial cohesion, helping rural areas to thrive and ensuring that no one is left behind. This approach aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable development and reduce inequalities, making tourism a key player in achieving these goals.
What's Next?
The Best Tourism Villages initiative will continue to expand, with the call for submissions for the sixth edition set to open in the first quarter of 2026. This will provide new opportunities for rural destinations to showcase their initiatives and gain global recognition. Additionally, 20 villages have been selected to participate in the Upgrade Programme, which supports high-potential villages in meeting recognition criteria and improving areas identified as weaknesses during evaluation. The ongoing growth of the Best Tourism Villages Network will facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices among its members, further promoting tourism as a driver for rural development.
