What's Happening?
NASA's Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) is set to offer a bilingual training session on May 21 and 28, 2026, focusing on the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and the OBIWAN
API. This training aims to educate participants on using spaceborne lidar data to monitor vegetation structure and biomass changes. The GEDI instrument, launched to the International Space Station in 2018, uses lidar technology to measure land surface profiles, providing valuable data for estimating above-ground biomass. The training will guide users in accessing and analyzing GEDI data through the OBIWAN API, hosted on Google Earth Engine, to develop customized carbon monitoring systems.
Why It's Important?
This training is crucial for enhancing the understanding and management of global vegetation dynamics, particularly in response to environmental changes and disturbances. By equipping participants with the skills to utilize GEDI data, NASA is fostering the development of advanced monitoring systems that can be applied at various scales, from local projects to national initiatives. This initiative supports efforts in environmental conservation, resource management, and climate change mitigation. The availability of such training to the public, especially in both English and Spanish, broadens the accessibility and potential impact of these technologies across diverse communities and sectors.
