What's Happening?
Iván Arriagada, CEO of the Chile-based mining company Antofagasta, has been reappointed as the chairperson of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). This appointment is effective immediately and will last for a two-year term. Arriagada succeeds
Tom Palmer, CEO of Newmont, who has served as the ICMM chairperson since October 2024 and is set to retire from Newmont at the end of the year. Arriagada previously held the ICMM chairperson role from 2022 to 2024, and his return is expected to bring continuity and experience to the organization. The ICMM, governed by a council of CEOs from its 26 member companies, focuses on industry performance and sustainability initiatives, including the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI).
Why It's Important?
The reappointment of Iván Arriagada as ICMM chairperson is significant for the mining industry as it ensures continuity in leadership and the ongoing implementation of critical sustainability initiatives. Arriagada's previous tenure saw advancements in industry standards, particularly in tailings management and responsible mining practices. His leadership is expected to further the ICMM's 2025+ strategy, which aims to make responsible mining the industry standard. This continuity is crucial for maintaining momentum in public consultations and the establishment of global standards, which can have far-reaching impacts on environmental practices and corporate responsibility within the mining sector.
What's Next?
Under Arriagada's leadership, the ICMM is expected to continue its focus on advancing the 2025+ strategy, which includes further development of the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative and the Global Tailings Management Institute. The organization will likely engage in additional rounds of public consultation to refine these standards. Arriagada's role will involve close collaboration with ICMM's CEO Rohitesh Dhawan and other industry leaders to promote responsible mining practices globally. The outcomes of these initiatives could influence regulatory frameworks and industry practices, potentially leading to more sustainable and environmentally friendly mining operations worldwide.
