What's Happening?
NBCUniversal Local has initiated its annual 'Clear The Shelters' campaign, aimed at promoting pet adoptions and raising funds for participating shelters. The campaign, which began on August 1, 2026, will run through the end of the month, with a donation
initiative extending until September 15. Since its inception in 2015, the campaign has facilitated over 1.3 million pet adoptions and raised more than $5.6 million. The 2025 campaign included over 1,700 shelters across 49 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam. This year, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is the presenting sponsor, with other partners like Greater Good Charities and WeRescue. Last year, the campaign resulted in over 160,000 adoptions and raised more than $628,000, marking the highest fundraising total since 2020.
Why It's Important?
The 'Clear The Shelters' campaign plays a crucial role in addressing the issue of overcrowded animal shelters across the United States. By facilitating adoptions and raising funds, the initiative helps alleviate the burden on shelters and provides animals with permanent homes. The campaign also raises awareness about the importance of pet adoption and the challenges faced by shelters. The involvement of major sponsors and partners highlights the campaign's significance and its impact on animal welfare. Additionally, the campaign's success in previous years demonstrates its effectiveness in mobilizing communities and resources to support animal shelters.
What's Next?
As the campaign progresses, participating shelters and rescues will continue to promote adoptions and seek donations. The campaign's success will depend on community engagement and the support of sponsors and partners. The initiative may also inspire similar campaigns and collaborations in the future, further supporting animal welfare efforts. The campaign's outcomes will be closely monitored to assess its impact and identify areas for improvement in future iterations.
