What's Happening?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a nationwide recall of approximately 5,795 pounds of frozen meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes produced by Power Plate Meals LLC. The recall was initiated due
to a labeling error where soy, a known allergen, was not declared on the product's packaging. These meals, packaged in 13.3-ounce vacuum-sealed trays, were produced between June 25, 2025, and June 10, 2026, and distributed in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The affected products can be identified by the establishment number '217SEND' inside the USDA mark of inspection. The recall was triggered after a state inspector discovered the omission of soy from the ingredients list, posing a potential risk to consumers with soy allergies.
Why It's Important?
This recall highlights the critical importance of accurate food labeling, especially concerning allergens. Soy is one of the nine major allergens identified by the FDA, and its undeclared presence in food products can lead to severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in sensitive individuals. The incident underscores the ongoing challenge for food manufacturers to comply with federal regulations that mandate clear labeling of allergens. Undeclared allergens are a leading cause of food recalls in the U.S., accounting for nearly 38.8% of all recalls in 2025. This situation emphasizes the need for stringent quality control measures in food production to protect consumer health and safety.
What's Next?
Consumers who have purchased the recalled meals are advised not to consume them and to either dispose of the products or return them to the place of purchase. The FSIS is urging individuals who may have experienced an allergic reaction after consuming the product to seek medical attention. This recall may prompt increased scrutiny and inspections of food labeling practices by regulatory bodies to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, it may lead to heightened awareness among consumers about the importance of checking food labels for allergen information.
