A recent study conducted by Peninsula Dental School in the south west of England has explored the career intentions and decisions of its dental students. The region is known as a 'dental desert' due to limited access to NHS dentistry, exacerbated by challenges in recruiting and retaining dentists, particularly in rural and coastal areas. Established in 2006, the Dental School aimed to address these workforce issues. However, many students still choose not to remain in the region post-graduation. The study utilized semi-structured qualitative interviews and thematic analysis to identify five key themes influencing career decisions: connections, location, undergraduate experience, professional opportunities, and financial considerations. These findings are intended to inform future strategies within the NHS Long-Term Workforce Plan for dentistry.
