What's Happening?
NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has announced the release of an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for the 2026 Astrophysics Explorers Program, specifically targeting Small Explorer (SMEX) missions. This initiative invites Principal Investigator-led
space science investigations to explore key astrophysical questions. The program aims to address fundamental questions about the universe, such as the nature of black holes, dark energy, and the potential for life on other planets. The AO outlines a schedule for proposal submissions, with a release date of June 9, 2026, and a proposal due date of September 9, 2026. The program is open to a wide range of organizations, including educational, industrial, and not-for-profit entities, as well as government agencies, with certain restrictions on international participation.
Why It's Important?
The 2026 Astrophysics Explorers Program represents a significant opportunity for advancing scientific knowledge in astrophysics. By focusing on small-scale, cost-effective missions, NASA can explore innovative ideas and technologies that might not be feasible in larger missions. This program could lead to breakthroughs in understanding the universe's fundamental properties and the potential for extraterrestrial life. The involvement of diverse organizations, including international participants, fosters collaboration and the sharing of expertise, potentially accelerating scientific discoveries. The program's focus on key astrophysical questions aligns with NASA's strategic goals of expanding human knowledge and understanding the universe.
What's Next?
Following the release of the AO, interested parties will prepare and submit proposals by the September 9, 2026 deadline. A virtual Preproposal Conference is scheduled for June 30, 2026, to provide additional information and address questions from potential proposers. NASA will evaluate the proposals through a competitive process, ultimately selecting one investigation to proceed into a combined Phase A&B. This selection process emphasizes the importance of compliance with the AO's requirements and guidelines. The chosen mission will contribute to NASA's broader efforts in astrophysics research and exploration.
